How to Create Embroidery Files: A Guide to the Perfect Template

23 December 2025

A good embroidery file is the foundation of a perfect stitch-out. But what makes an ideal template? Here are the key points to keep in mind.

The best format for embroidery artwork is vector (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF). Pixel images (JPG, PNG) can be used too, but they first need to be converted into a stitch file. This process is called "digitising" or "punching".

Key tips for your artwork:

  • Use clean, sharp outlines
  • Avoid details finer than 1 mm
  • Keep text at least 5 mm tall
  • Reduce the number of colours to the essentials
  • Bear in mind that gradients are difficult to reproduce in embroidery
